Visit the beach on any hot summer day and you are likely to find a wall of sun and ocean worshiping individuals, couples and families. This is true around the world. Very few people hate the beach. Preparing for the Beach

- Stock up on full, or broad spectrum sunscreen that is not expired, is at least SPF 30, and is water-resistant. Make sure that you apply the sunscreen liberally and reapply it at least every 2 hours. Don’t forget your lips, tips of your ears and toes.
- Exfoliate and moisturize to help turn over your epidermal layer of dead skin cells and look your best to hit the beach. Use the moisturizer liberally and apply it while your skin is still wet in order to lock in more moisture.
- Skip the tanning salon and use a self-tanner to get a warm glow instead of mid-winter white. This will help you have color without the risk of UV radiation that causes skin damage such as wrinkling and dangerous cancers.
- Get rid of winter calluses with a salt scrub and pumice stone, followed by a good thick moisturizer that is made for your feet.
- Remove hair via waxing or depilatory a few days before you go to the beach to prevent chafing and irritation.
- Wear protective gear such as a wide brimmed hat that gives you protection from every angle of the sun. Long sleeve cover ups serve the same purpose.
- UV protective sprays and leave-in conditioners can help protect your hair, along with your skin. If you have thinning hair, make sure to use a sunscreen on your scalp.
In addition to that advice, you should:
- Eat a good diet full of skin enhancing vitamins like A, C, E and D and lean proteins.
- If you use retinol, or other skincare products that make you exceptionally sensitive to the sun you may want to temporarily discontinue its use, or take extra precautions to protect your skin.
- Hydrate. Make sure that you arrive at the beach fully hydrated and drink plenty of water while you are there, more than you usually do if you are sweating.
Skin Care at the Beach
- Don’t get sunburned. If your skin starts to turn pink reapply sunscreen again and leave the sun. It just isn’t worth the consequences.
- Pay attention to the impact of the salt of the ocean on your skin. As your skin puckers it is becoming more dehydrated and will take longer to plump back up.
- Stay hydrated. Drink a lot of water and then more. Avoid alcohol and caffeine as those will help to dehydrate you.
- Pay attention to what hours are the most harsh for UV radiation at your location during the time period you are there and adjust your beach time to avoid it.
- Take a big umbrella and spend your time under it and encourage your family to spend as much time as possible under it as well.
- Be cognizant of mosquitoes and other biting insects. Some of them carry disease and others are annoying and can cause irritating and unsightly bumps on your skin. Use an insect deterrent. Make sure that you treat bites quickly and effectively.
- If you are unlucky enough to be stung by a jellyfish while you are playing in the surf make sure that you treat the sting with vinegar.
