Skin Care Questions

What is the appropriate regimen for my skin?

A typical skin care regimen is cleanse > tone > exfoliate > apply serum > apply moisturizer. It is extremely important to use a sunscreen daily.

Many MDSUN products can be used during the daytime and nighttime, however, your individual skin concerns may dictate some differences in your morning and night routine. A regimen is suggested after you have had a consultation with a skin care specialist who can determine the perfect system for your skin type and conditions.

In what order should I apply skin care products?

If you are using multiple skin care products at the same time, always start with the lightest product first (i.e. serums and watery products), the heavier next (i.e. oils and lotions), and the heaviest one (i.e. creams and ointments) applied last so that your skin can obtain the benefits of all of the products and all of the active ingredients.

During the daytime, make sure that you apply your sunscreen last once your other products have settled.
For maximum product efficacy, please follow our application protocol.

How often should I re-apply my sunscreen?

It depends on your skin condition, your level of activity, and how long you'll be out in the sun. Sunscreens should be applied 30 minutes before sun exposure to allow the ingredients to fully bind to the skin.
Reapplication of sunscreen is just as important as putting it on in the first place. If you are going to sweat a lot, exercise vigorously, be physically active, or be outside for a long time, then it's best to re-apply sunscreen every 2 hours at the very least.

Do I need to wear sunscreen every day, even if I stay indoors all day?

MDSUN highly recommends applying sunscreen every day, regardless of season, to protect your skin from premature aging. UV rays damage the skin, age skin prematurely, and increase your risk of skin cancer. Just the few minutes of sun exposure you receive each day while driving to work or walking your dog is enough to cause hyperpigmentation and premature aging over time. Wear sunscreen every day, even on rainy days or on days you stay indoors, because UV rays still penetrate through clouds and windows. Also, indoor lighting (florescent and halogen bulbs) also breaks down collagen and can cause the same aging as UVA rays.

Is it better to wear higher SPF sunblock? How high should I go?

We use sunscreen to block ultraviolet light from damaging the skin. There are two categories of UV light, UVA and UVB, that we consider in terms of sunscreen. UVB causes sunburn, and UVA has more long-term damaging effects on the skin, like premature aging.

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is a rating system for sun protection. The SPF number is a measure of how long you can stay in the sun without burning. It also indicates the level of UVB absorption, but this number doesn't increase exponentially. For example, an SPF 15 sunscreen blocks 93.3 percent of UVB radiation, while an SPF 30 sunscreen blocks nearly 97 percent. The SPF number has doubled, but the absorption rate has increased by only 3.4 percent.

We suggest wear SPFs no lower than 30 and no higher than 50. In addition to an SPF of 30+, your sunscreen should include some combination of the following UVA-blocking ingredients: zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, avobenzone, ecamsule, and oxybenzone. Sunscreens with both UVA and UVB protection may be labeled multi spectrum, broad spectrum, or UVA/UVB protection. The best way make sure you are protected is to reapply sunscreen often.

Do I really need a different moisturizer for my eyes?

The skin around the eye area is composed of delicate tissues and is different from the skin on your face, so it requires extra special attention. The skin around the eyes is more sensitive and has a minimal amount of oil glands to keep it hydrated; therefore, it is beneficial to apply an eye cream daily to keep this skin in the best condition possible.

Eye creams are typically formulated with smaller molecules since the skin in the eye area does not have the same thickness or amount/size of pores as the rest of the face. This is part of the reason why we recommend using a separate eye cream.

Is there anything special I need to do to recover my skin after a laser skin treatment or increase the effectiveness of the laser treatment?

Recovery is minimal. Mild peeling, dryness, redness, or crusting is expected during the first few days after a laser skin treatment. Hydro Recovery Mask, anti-inflammatories, moisturizers, and sunblock are required during this period, but no exfoliating agents should be used for three days post-treatment. It is also extremely important to stay out of the sun before and after the treatment. After the skin has healed, a good skin care regimen with a mild cleanser, a soothing serum, and a repair moisturizer will help maintain and improve the results of the procedure.

What is the difference between hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is the darkening of skin caused by an increase in melanin. It is worsened through overexposure to the sun, which leads to the overproduction of melanin.

One form of hyperpigmentation ismelasma, a skin problem caused by hormonal imbalances. This is why we often see this condition arise during pregnancy.

Hypopigmentation is the opposite of hyperpigmentation. It means the decrease or depletion of melanin in areas of the skin. Vitiligo is a skin condition that is characterized by hypopigmentation. In addition, hypopigmentation can be caused by skin damage such as infection, burns, etc.

What are sun spots, and what do sun spots look like?

Sun spots are actually one of the most common signs of aging on your skin. Sun spots, also known as age spots, are caused primarily by years of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun. The use of commercial tanning lamps and tanning beds can also contribute to the development of age spots.
They can occur on all skin types and appear as early as your 40s—or much earlier if you’ve had a great deal of exposure to the sun. Your genetic makeup may also play a role in how susceptible you are to the development of sun spots.

They most commonly appear on areas of the skin that receive heightened exposure to the sun. That includes the face, hands, shoulders, forearms, and arms. Of course, any areas of your skin that are exposed to UV rays regularly, with or without sun protection, may be prone to the development of sun spots.

Sun spots are typically brown spots that develop on the surface of the skin. However, they may also appear black or a very dark shade of brown. It’s important not to confuse age spots with moles. A mole causes a raised bump on the skin. Sun spots are flat and do not impact the skin’s texture. Sun spots are not significantly different in form from freckles, although freckles are primarily genetic and appear at a much younger age than sun spots. Because sun spots form over time, primarily due to sun exposure, they are often more concentrated in specific areas.

 Product Questions

What are the differences between MDSUN products and over-the-counter products?

At MDSUN, we focus on using the most effective, concentrated, hypoallergenic, and medically proven ingredients. All products in the MDSUN combine high amounts of cosmeceutical, active ingredients with the highest quality certified ingredients in pure, safe, and clean formulas. They also deeply penetrate into the skin due to specialized Liposomal technology. Products are intensely researched and tested for their effectiveness and ability to deliver ingredients to target sites within the skin. In essence, MDSUN products contain the power of medical science without the prescription.

Over-the-counter products do not contain the same amount of active ingredients as MDSUN products and cannot penetrate the skin as well. Since many consumers “self-diagnose” when choosing a skin care product from a department store or drugstore, these products must be made safely. Big cosmetic companies cannot afford to have a vast number of consumers with issues from using very active products; therefore, an over-the-counter skin care product may feel good and smell good, but most likely won’t have significant activity in its formulation.

Do your products contain parabens?

We do not use parabens for preservatives. There are no synthetic ingredients and/or artificial preservatives in our products. We only use 100% natural preservatives in our products.

Are your products tested on animals?

We do not test our products on animals. Our products are tested and developed in a laboratory environment to ensure the highest standards of production.

When can I expect to see results?

With many of our products, initial improvement is often seen in 2 weeks. Full results can be seen after 2-3 months of regular use. Results will vary depending on your skin type, skin condition, depth of pigmentation, and the amount of sun exposure you receive on a daily basis. However, consistent use of one of our customized regimens will definitely result in visible improvements.

Are MDSUN products safe to use before and after a cosmetic procedure?

Most of our products are hypoallergenic and are formulated to be exceptionally gentle. Our products are recommended to help relieve skin and speed up the skin recovery process after cosmetic procedures such as peels and laser treatments.

Do your products contain fragrance?

No. Fragrances contain many allergens, so in order for our products to be non-irritating and suitable for all skin types, all MDSUN products are formulated without fragrance.

Why is there a medicinal scent to some of the products in your line?

Fragrance is a common irritant that can be a major issue for sensitive skin. MDSUN products are formulated with the highest quality ingredients, which includes a few that have natural, medicinal scents. Our commitment to formulation sincerity and maximum effectiveness means that sometimes the scents cannot be covered, but they should dissipate after application.

Are MDSUN products safe to use during pregnancy/nursing? Can I take Oral Brightener when I'm pregnant?

We generally do not recommend any oral pills or supplements during pregnancy or nursing, unless allowed by your doctor. Should you have any further questions related to ingredients in MDSUN products or any other products during your pregnancy, we recommend that you discuss safe skincare options for you and your baby with your physician for the best advice.

Can skin cancer patients apply MDSUN products?

We strongly recommend that skin cancer patients consult their doctor before applying any products.

What is EGF and how does it work?

Epidermal growth factor plays an important role in the regulation of cell growth, proliferation, and differentiation by binding to its receptor EGFR. EGF is a single, non-glycosylated, polypeptide chain containing 53 amino acids. It has a molecular mass of 6222 Dalton.EGF acts as a catalyst in the cell healing process. It promotes cell growth, increases the ability of the skin to absorb nutrients by 50% to 60%, improves circulation, and stimulates collagen. This increased collagen production provides an effective solution to your skin problems by accelerating the proliferation of epithelial cells, smoothing away wrinkles, lightening your skin, and reducing dryness.

Will my skin produce bumps/syringoma/milia on the lower eyelid skin after using MDSUN eye products?

Our products are formulated to be suitable for all skin types and do not contain ingredients that are known to clog up the pores.

If you have a high tendency to develop clogged pores but need a moisturizer, we recommend our Intensive Eye Gel, which provides a cooling sensation and reduces dark circles, puffiness, and tiredness. It is more suitable for daytime use when the eye area tends to accumulate more sweat and dirt.

We recommend our Med-Eye Complex Cream for nighttime use. It is a targeted eye treatment to tighten and firm the upper eyelid while smoothing fine lines around the entire eye.
